The Pursuit of Happyness Is Yours for the Taking

Have you seen the movie, "The Pursuit of Happyness?" If you haven't I recommend you go see it. This movie is the epitome of the American Dream. It's the epitome because it proves once again, the human spirit is alive and well as long as we face our fears head on. This true story about the life of Chris Gardner is surreal in that he didn't allow circumstances to define his life. In other words, while heading to a job interview he was arrested for parking ticket violations. After being released from jail Gardner rescheduled and went to his job interview. When asked why he didn't have a belt on, he simply told the interviewer the truth. Kudos to the interviwer and the company. That's not all, Chris Gardner and his young son were homeless for several years. In other words, they slept in bathrooms and lived out of a suitcase. One cousld say he could have easily given up because he had real life issues anyone could understand. Chris Gardner's life changed the day he saw a man parking a Lamborghini. He walked up to the man and asked him, "What do you do and how do you do it?" The man replied, "I am a stock broker." The rest as they say is history. Chris Gardner's passion for becoming a stock broker overcame the many shortcomings he was faced with. Not only did he become a successful stockbroker but he is one of the worlds best. The moral of this story is Chris Gardner never gave up and neither should you.

The First Rule for Speakers is Keeping Your Focus on People

Forget about the first rule of speaking and you will find yourself speaking in front of a mirror. What do I mean by this? It's very simple, all speakers should focus their talk on the people sitting in the seats listening and watching them.

The best way to streamline your topic is to focus on ways to enhance the experience of your audience members. While conducting speaker coaching, my first question is, "What is your niche?" In other words, what makes your topic selection unique for your market. Typically I receive the following response, "I don't know what my niche market is."

To everyone reading this blog, your niche market should be centered on the people in your audience because you're shaping the hearts and minds of the people. Keep your focus on the audience and you'll be asked to return to speak time and time again. Speaking and speaking effectively is about the people, nothing more and nothing less.

Triumph of the Human Spirit

The primary role of a professional speaker is to empower the audience to be more, do more, and achieve more. Let it be said, your role is that of a hope merchant. What is a hope merchant? You stand before an audience and deliver a life changing speech, you deliver a message unlike anything the audience has ever heard before. For example, as a speaker you may boldly state to your audience, "We all have greatness on the inside of us." Statements like this resonate with the audience so much so, they sit up in their chair and listen intensely. Take it from me, I've delivered good speeches and I've deliver great speeches. I want you to know, as a hope merchant your role is to lead people to understand they can experience the triumph of the human spirit. You can help people see the genius, gifts, and talents they possess. It's very similar to a sculptor, you shape and mold people into the greatness they have on the inside of them. As a professional speaker you are an ambassador of hope. During your next speaking engagement put your best speech forward and deliver a hit program to your audience. Here's to your success, the audience, and the triumph of the human spirit.
